An English Major Walks Into A Bar...

As you know I was at home sick on Wednesday. Up until then my best friend, Jamie, and I had yet to exchange Christmas presents. We had already mailed them to each other long ago, but Jamie was traveling and didn't get back from her chain of trips until a few days ago. On Wednesday we finally had time to Skype each other (I in bed looking terrible and sickly) and open the presents! I gave her a set of nutcracker mugs because she has a nutcracker collection. She gave me two books: Finish This Book by Keri Smith and Tequila Mockingbird by Tim Federle.

The first is a book in which the author claims she found several pages of an incomplete story floating around a park one day. Unable to resist she took them home and published them in such a way that you fill in the blanks. The beginning has several activities for you, the reader, to complete before you get to see the story-pages she found in the park. I'm still in the activities section so I can't really tell you much else. It was a great diversion while I was sick, though, as I could do it in bed.

The second book is full of drink recipes based on literature! This is so right up my alley, you couldn't believe it. The back of Tequila Mockingbird says "Even if you don't have a B.A. in English, tonight you're gonna drink like you do." It's beautiful.

The first drink I made is 'The Last Of The Mojitos' (a play off of The Last Of The Mohicans by James Fenimore Cooper). It is absolutely delicious and pretty easy to make. Drop 5 blueberries, 3 small strawberries,  8 sprigs of fresh mint, 1/2 ounce lemon juice, and 1 ounce agave nectar into a Collins glass. Muddle. Add 1 and 1/2 ounces of rum and 2 handfuls of ice. Stir well. fill to the top of the glass with club soda.

I changed this recipe up a bit by using 2 large strawberries, only using three sprigs of mint but tearing all of the leaves into small pieces before dropping them in the glass, and using lime juice instead of lemon juice. To measure out the ounces I used a shot glass. The standard American shot glass is either 1 ounce or 1.5 ounces. Because I'm not too picky on the measurements being exact I just filled up a shot glass half way with the lime juice and poured it in, all the way full for the agave nectar before pouring it in, and one and a half times for the rum. If you don't have a Collins glass just be sure to use a tall glass with a wide enough bottom for you to muddle in.

You can always garnish your drink when your done, but you don't have to. Add a straw and enjoy the fresh tasting deliciousness!

    1. And it's been sunny here too (probably why I felt like a fruity cocktail over a warm drink). I'm feeling much better, thanks!
