Have you ever seen these Apartment Therapy Clementine Candles? I really wanted to make one. Shredding citrus fruit peels in your garbage disposal makes your kitchen smell like a dream and I thought I could really capitalize on this by lighting clementines on fire, that way it would be portable and I could make every room in my house smell that good. Unfortunately this turned out to be a 'How To: Fail.'
The basic idea is to create a candle from a clementine peel. You slice the peel in half, pull it away from the body of the clementine without tearing the skin, cut a hole in the top of one peel half, poor olive oil in the other, then take a bit of flesh from the half with olive oil, light it on fire, and put the half with the hole back on top. Simple right? Wrong.
It started out really well. My pairing knife was nice and sharp, I managed to pull the peel away from the fruit without tearing it, I even got a nice long bit of flesh in the middle of one half. The problem? I could not for the life of me light it on fire. I could burn it just fine, but I couldn't get it to keep a flame.
Eventually I soaked a bit of rolled up paper towel with olive oil and lit it on fire. Then I placed it in the middle of my clementine skin. It created a candle just fine, it just didn't smell very good. So really, all I've succesfully done is shown you how to create a candle should your power go out and you have clementines, olive oil, and paper towels, but no actual candles. Hurrah!
This week I plan on creating my How To post over the weekend so I have time to come up with something else if it fails.
I hope you all have a wonderful Valentine's Day and long weekend! Hooray for having President's Day off!
Have you ever made a clementine candle? Were you able to make it work? Tell me about it below.
