It's been cold most everywhere lately. It was even cold in New Mexico this last week, we had a whopping two inches of snow at my house. Of course it only lasted for about 24 hours, but everyone said we were dropping in to a cold streak. I've been wanting to try hot buttered rum for a while now, so when the weather men said we'd be nice and cold I thought a toasty drink would be just the thing. Of course today it turned out to be 61 degrees and sunny. Not that I'm complaining, I loved it! Never the less, here's the hot buttered rum I drank while sun bathing (not really, it wasn't quite that warm).
It was delicious and I definitely felt warm and cozy from the inside out! It didn't taste quite like I expected, I thought it would be thick, but the consistency is closer to tea. Since I'm reading Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince I pretended I was drinking butter beer, I even ended up reading a passage in Hogsmead while downing my concoction. My buttered rum is probably even easier than Madame Rosmerta's butter beer, because mine is store bought!
Itching to make buttered rum, I looked up recipes. None of them were overly difficult, but nearly all involved making an entire batch and I thought it best if I didn't try and drink 12 mugs in one sitting. The beauty of buying the batter is that I can make just one mug, seal up the rest and move on with my life until the next time. Plus I got this batter from Smith's for just $3.99!
I have to admit the batter tasted pretty good on it's own. I was tempted to eat it like cookie dough. I refrained. To make this drink start by putting the kettle on. Once you have boiling water pour some into your mug and let it sit for 20 seconds so the mug is thoroughly warmed. Dump out the water, add 2 teaspoons of Trader Vic's Hot Buttered Rum Batter, 1.5 ounces of rum, fill the rest of the mug with boiling water, and stir! Once you've dissolved all the batter it's ready to drink. I'll readily admit I added closer to 3 teaspoons of batter and I'd highly recommend it if you like sweet drinks.
Of course after getting home and looking up Trader Vic's for you, I found this recipe to make the batter from scratch. If you have all the ingredients at home you can skip the trip to the store and have a delicious drink for free!
One final note, if you haven't read this article about why Ron and Hermione actually do belong together, you should. It sums up my feelings nicely and I think a number of other people's. Agree or disagree, it's worth the read.
When it is very cold all of us think about nutritious foods that can warm the body, but this seems to me to suggest that caloric too ..

So true, warm and good foods are the way to go!
DeleteYum that drink sounds delish! We made hot cholcolate with baileys this weekend... so yummy! That article was really interesting, also. I don't have a strong opinion either way but I found it interesting. Also, do I live under a rock? Because I never heard her say that Dumbledoor was gay before reading this!

Mmmm, hot chocolate and baileys sounds delicious. Maybe I'll have that the next time it's cold here! J.K. Rowling said Dumbledor was gay shortly after publishing the last book! It was quite the shocker at the time.
DeleteWell, it's too hot in here!!
ReplyDeleteI've already liked your facebook page, dear!

DeleteYummm! I've never tried making hot buttered rum from a batter, but I'll bet it's delicious! I recently tried making it with apple cider, butter, brown sugar, cinnamon, and of course some rum. It was pretty good, but I'll have to try this. :) New follower, by the way!

Deletewhat a warm and cozy and wonderful post - hot buttered rum sounds delicious, and i would buy immediately (especially for my minneapolis winter) if i thought i could resist eating it with a spoon :)
ReplyDeleteHaha, eating it with a spoon is definitely a temptation! I have to put it out of site so I don't sneak bits of it.
DeleteThat looks delicious!

Yummmm that sounds like such a great cold weather treat, though I've never heard of it. After spending time in the cold this weekend, I immediately grabbed a hot chocolate. I think it's part of the rule of cold weather outings that you get a warm drink :P

Something About That
I agree, if I'm outside in the cold I immediately make a warm drink when I get home. It's the best cure all.

I know exactly how you feel! I think I'm going to go home and have a mojito. Or more hot buttered rum. One of the two.
DeleteI totally agree that Ron and Hermione belong together! I'm loving this LL series btw, it's a nice way to start the week! I've never heard of a hot buttered rum, not sure if i'll find the batter here, but i may be able to tweek that recipe and give it a try as it does sound yummy and perfect for today's weather - cold cold cold! x
ReplyDeleteThank you! I debated for a while about whether to do it at the end of the week or the beginning, so it's nice to hear that you like the timing of it! I hope you are able to make the recipe at home! It's a great way to warm up from the inside out.
