Literary Libations: Red Wine Cooler & The Goldfinch

Share it Please
As promised, this week I bring you a red wine cooler. This deep red drink has a light sparkling note to it due to the ginger ale and a fruity upswing I blame on the Sprite.

What you will need: 4 oz. red wine of choice, 2 oz. ginger ale, 2 oz. lemon-lime soda. I used a deep Cabernet Sauvignon so that the dark fruit flavors would mingle with the spritzy, light sodas. So different, and yet they pair so well. It feels like dancing the waltz to a pop song. Pour everything into a large wine glass. Garnish with a slice of lemon.

I'm now a quarter of the way into The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt. At first I had a hard time getting into the story, for reasons that were not entirely Tartt's fault. Having just finished the Harry Potter series, which is one of my all time favorites, I needed a little bit of time to flush it from my system. The Goldfinch is an entirely different kind of book from Harry Potter, the only similarity being that they are both works of fiction and both have a young boy as the main character.

I've finally begun to really feel a connection with the protagonist, Theo. He is 13 years old, his father has run out on him, and his mother is killed in a terrible accident leaving him with a feeling of utter abandonment. Luckily for Theo some family friends take him in. While the events leading up to his mother's death hold an obsessive fascination for Theo, I don't really believe they are the point of the novel. So far Theo has begun to develop some very interesting and unique relationships. While I'm not far enough in to speak with certainty, I believe these relationships will really be the stars of the story. Come read a long with me! I'd love to hear your thoughts as I journey through Theo's world.
