Literary Libations: Mimosas & The Goldfinch

Share it Please

A drink so popular it's even had at brunch, the mimosa is a classic sunny day drink. Classic mimosas are about as easy as it gets: two parts orange juice and two parts champagne. Soleil has made it even easier to enjoy by selling a pre-made mimosa. Ranging from $9.99 to $11.99 at most grocery stores, you can even find it as cheap as $6.99 at Costco. In the past I've always made my Mimosas myself, and in truth you probably get a bit more bang for your buck that way. However, I love the ease of having a ready to go Mimosa in a bottle whenever I'm having people over. I like to have a bottle or two in the fridge as back up, that way I'm ready to go for any surprise guests!

Warning: Spoilers for The Goldfinch ahead
When we last left Theo he was a new house guest of Hobie's. His parents are both gone and his lawyer has been encouraging Theo to apply for boarding school as Hobie has never officially adopted him, meaning the lawyer sees the living arrangement as temporary. Theo wants to stay with Hobie more than anything. The first reason is his genuine affection for Hobie, the second is his intense fear that a roommate would find the stolen Goldfinch painting and turn him into the police. An Italian family was just recently caught trying to sell a stolen painting from the same museum and was punished to the highest extent of the law, taking Theo's paranoia to new heights.

In an attempt to stay with Hobie, Theo applies for an early college program (a program in which the students live at home) and begins to make himself useful in Hobie's furniture restoration shop. Theo is essentially acting as an apprentice. One day, after Hobie very nearly stumbles upon the stolen painting, Theo comes up with the idea of hiding The Goldfinch in a storage unit. He disguises it among camping equipment and stores it without raising suspicion. Next thing we know, it is eight years later.

Eight years later. We go from an adolescent Theo who has plenty of new challenges for the author to explore (I mean, it's college) to an adult who is now working as a full time partner with Hobie. The first thing we learn is that Theo's nerdy, childhood best friend has drowned, along with his father, in a boating accident. He is told this by Plat, the older brother, as he randomly runs into Theo on the street. They catch up over beers and Plat brings Theo home to see his ailing mother. This is the family that Theo stayed with directly after his mother's death, so there is a strong past connection, but Theo hasn't talked with them since he was in middle school.

The transition seems rather jarring. Switching from a young teen to an established adult so quickly. Especially after spending so long on Theo as a fourteen and fifteen year old. It's possible it will eventually tie over, but at the moment I'm beginning to wonder if the author is just playing with me.

    1. I agree, Mimosas are perfect for any occasion! I think its great, too, if you are having lots of people over because then everyone can easily pour their own drink and you don't get stuck behind the counter mixing.
