How To: Make Crossword Charades

Share it Please
Today I am hosting a large party for my workplace. I'm supposed to have both food and entertainment. The food is easy, but sometimes coming with a party game that people of all ages and abilities can take part in is difficult. I thought a lot about different games out there and didn't come up with anything that worked, so I created my own game!

Essentially Crossword Charades is the combination of crosswords and Pictionary. I've created a large crossword, but rather than writing down clues for people to guess the words, I've created a slip of paper with each word on it. Each person at the party will receive a slip of paper with where the word goes (1 down, 2 across, etc.) and the word. Then in order people will take turns acting out their word while all the other attendees guess what they are acting out. Once the crowd guesses the word correctly the actor writes in the word on the puzzle and sits down. Then the next person gets up and acts out their word. This is good for team building because everyone is working as a team rather than competing. Plus, anytime you have people trying to act out words you just know there will be laughter.

To make this game work for a large group I needed to make a big crossword puzzle. First I made a small version on letter paper so I would be sure that all my words worked together. Then I laid out butcher paper and scaled it up. My original puzzle was 8 inches by 8 inches with each square .5 inches by .5 inches. I scaled this up to 40 inches by 40 inches with each square 2.5 inches by 2.5 inches. You can always make your bigger if you have the space. I taped my crossword to a mobile chalk board, but you could always tape yours to a wall or any other visible, flat surface.

On the butcher paper I first traced everything out lightly in pencil, using a yard stick to measure out the grid, and then traced over the pencil with a chiseled tip Sharpie. I also wrote in the words lightly with pencil so I wouldn't accidentally black out any squares that I needed. After I finished blacking out the unused squares I erased the words.

I think everyone will have a blast acting out their words and watching others attempt to act. The game promises to be great fun and kept everyone involved. I hope to be able to take pictures of us playing and post action shots after the party. Happy Friday!
