Literary Libations: Gin & Tonic

Share it Please

If you've ever experienced a broiling day when all you've wanted is an ice cold drink that's not too sweet, then the gin & tonic should be your go-to drink. So simple with just two ingredients, the art of the gin & tonic is in the balance. Too much tonic water and your drink is too sweet and bland, too much gin and you will taste nothing but pine needles. My perfect balance is 1 shot to half a can of tonic water. Doesn't matter how big you make the drink, just add up. Want a larger drink? Add two shots of gin and the whole can of tonic water. Everyone is a little different, so play around with it. If you really hate having sweetness in your drink you can always try substituting the tonic with club soda.

Final Review: The Goldfinch

Guys, I've come to a conclusion. It is taking me way too long to read The Goldfinch and there is only one reason: it isn't engaging me enough. Honestly, I'm only 60% through the book, which is abysmal for me. If I like a book I'm normally done with it in a month, unless it is exceptionally long, and if I really love a book I'm normally done with it in a week. I've been reading this same book for months now. I'd rather watch TV than read this book, a very bad sign. I could see why some people would like this book, but it just doesn't really speak to me on any significant level. So far the most relatable things that have happened are the death of Theo's mother at the very beginning of the book and Theo being love lorn because Pippa prefers a college boyfriend over him. Theo has just been becoming more and more unlikeable. I'm not sure if he will ever be redeemed. I have to admit that I went and read reviews on Good Reads to see if it sounded like this book would ever get better. It seems people either love this book or they hate it, and I'm afraid I'm on the side that hates it. My final recommendation? Don't buy this book, check it out from the library. If you read the first 100 pages and are loving it, great! If you don't enjoy the first 100 pages, put it down. It doesn't get better. I'm still going to finish this book, but I'm just the type of person who can't bear to put down a book once I've begun it. Putting down a book early feels like walking out in the middle of a conversation. I'm not going to talk about The Goldfinch on here anymore as I feel like I'm just continuously griping about it. If you have ever read this book, or decide to read it, let me know what you think! Do you agree with me or do you think it deserved book of the year?

    1. It's a great casual drink that guys can get behind, too! I really like serving them at mixed gender parties. Plus, the drink is clear so even if spilled it won't stain your clothes or furniture!

  3. I'm not really a fan of the gin & tonic but it is a great drink if you're looking for something that isn't super sweet. I've never read The Goldfinch but after your review I definitely don't think it's something I'd be in to!

  4. Gin & tonic is my go to drink when I am in a bar (assuming they don't have some fantastic drink list!)… so good!

Meanwhile, I haven't picked up The Goldfinch, but I know what you mean--- if it takes me a long time to read a book it is a bad sign.
