Literary Libations: Drunken Strawberries

Share it Please
It's summer now and that means two things: it's time to have fun and stay cool. Drunken Strawberries are great on top of ice cream, which means we can do both with one easy recipe.

You will need: 16 oz of strawberries, 1 cup of a light red wine, 1 oz of honey bourbon, 1/2 cup of sugar, vanilla ice cream.

Hull (remove the stems from) your strawberries and slice them into quarters. Set to the side. In a container that can be covered (I used Tupperware) mix the wine, honey bourbon, and sugar. The sugar won't all dissolve right away, so don't worry about that. Add in the strawberries and stir gently to make sure all the strawberry pieces have been coated by the wine mixture. Set in fridge for at least one hour to marinate. Once strawberries are cool and have had time to absorb the wine mixture, scoop vanilla ice cream into a large wine glass or bowl and top with strawberries. Serve while cold. Easy and delicious!

If you have minors attending your party put some quartered strawberries in a separate container, sprinkle them with sugar, and set them to chill in the fridge at the same time as the drunken ones are chilling. Otherwise serve them the same way as the Drunken Strawberries.

During the summer I like my literature simple and sweet, just like my desserts, which normally means I read a lot of Young Adult (YA) fiction. I just finished reading Kiera Cass's YA novel, The Selection, and I would highly recommend it if you want something light and fun to read this summer. This book is the perfect example of dystopian teenage literature meets fairytale. One of the other reviewers said it best, "I'm rating this book purely on my enjoyment of it and not on some scale deciding whether it was great literature or not. It's fluff and I loved it." In fact, this book is decidedly not great literature, so if that's what you want I suggest you look elsewhere. However, if like me, you are a sucker for romance novels in which princes dabble with beautiful, but otherwise normal girls, you will love this book. If you like dystopian novels like Divergent, you will devour this book. If you enjoy the trope in which the guy falls for the most disinterested girl, you will fall hard for The Selection. Prepare yourself, this novel is The Hunger Games meets The Bachelor and while my English degree is screaming at me to leave such decidedly YA fiction to the teenagers, I unashamedly love it. And I'm pretty sure you'll enjoy it too.

    1. I bet you could do this with most fruits, just changing the type of wine accordingly! I bet apples would also be pretty tasty with white wine. :)

    1. Oh no! Here we can find strawberries year round, but they are definitely best around mid-July. I bet you could do this with some other fruits that are in season, just vary the type of wine to what you think would go best and maybe change the bourbon out for brandy depending on the type of fruit. I hope that helps! :)
