Literary Libations: My Favorite Coffee

Share it Please

There are very few things in life that are better than curling up with a cup of coffee and a good book. Ideally the coffee should be strong Arabica and the book should make you forget where you are. So today I thought I'd share my favorite coffee with you: Gevalia's Signature Blend. You can get it whole bean, ground, and k-cup. You get a better cup of coffee if you make it from fresh ground with a ceramic drip coffee maker, but using a Keurig machine is far more convenient and honestly what I use 90% of the time. It is strong enough that it does not taste watered down, but not so dark that I feel like I'm drinking sludge. This coffee is not bitter, which is a big deal for me. I think you will enjoy this "A smooth, medium-bodied blend."

My husband and I listened to Divergent by Veronica Roth on tape when we drove to LA. When we got back it took us a little bit to find the time to finish it, but we finally did last week. Divergent is about a dystopian society in which people are broken up into factions. Factions are made up by personality type; you can join the Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). In this society when you come of age you take a test to determine which faction you relate to the most, although you are allowed to choose any faction you desire. The test is administered by putting the person into a manipulated simulation. This allows the faction leaders to see how you act under pressure in dangerous situations without putting the test taker in any actual danger. Divergents are people who do not neatly fall into any one category and are able to manipulate the simulations themselves. For some strange reason (which will become clear by the end of the book) Divergents are considered a danger to society and are killed. You may have guessed that our protagonist, Tris, is Divergent. She grew up in the Agnegation faction (children grow up in the faction of their parents), but she joins the Dauntless faction as an adult, leaving behind her family and friends. Dauntless turns out to be more brutal than she expects and she faces everything from death threats to rape attempts. She does find friends and, eventually, love. As the society begins to collapse in on itself Tris must try to remain under the radar while fighting for the lives of her family, friends, and new love. Divergent, while the story is very different, has a similar tone to The Hunger Games. If you enjoyed The Hunger Games then I think you will also enjoy Divergent. If slightly angsty and dystopian novels about teenagers aren't your jam, then stay far away from this one. And if by some strange miracle you haven't heard of The Hunger Games trilogy yet, go read them. Now. And yes, the books are better than the movies.

Have a great Monday and don't forget your coffee!
