Ridiculously Practical Meals: Pigs In A Blanket... For Adults

Share it Please

As a child Pigs In A Blanket was one of those meals every one loved. My brother and I loved it because of the gooey cheese and the flaky crescent rolls. It happily fulfilled our unhealthy cheese obsession. My mom loved it because it took so little time to make. Win-Win. Today I still get the occasional craving. They remind me of summer time and camping. If you want to make the original recipe you can find it here, but I've updated it to make it a little more adult friendly.

You will need: 8 pre-cooked sausages of your choosing (I used Aidells' roasted garlic and gruyere cheese chicken sausages which you can find at Target), 4 slices of Muenster cheese (or any other cheese you feel will compliment your sausages best), and 1 package of original Pillsbury crescent rolls.

Preheat your oven to 375 degrees. Take your cheese slices and cut them in half, creating 8 pieces. Lay out the crescent rolls on a cookie sheet and pull them into the perforated triangles. Wrap a piece of cheese around each sausage and then wrap each sausage in a crescent roll triangle. Place equidistantly apart on the cookie sheet. Bake in the oven for 10 to 12 minutes (or until crescent rolls have risen and are golden brown). Serve while warm.

The higher quality sausage and cheese make these a little more sophisticated than the original recipe. They are delicious and so easy, great for a quick meal on a week night. It took me about 5 minutes to prepare everything, for a total of 15 minutes including prep-work and cook time. Since sausage and crescents are not particularly healthy, I paired my Pigs In A Blanket with raspberries, carrots, and vegetable dip. Bon appétit!

  4. When I was a little girl, I hated hotdogs but loved pigs in a blanket - it sounds so silly but there's something about that croissant on the outside that absolutely makes all the difference! I haven't had one for years... in fact, I think I'd sort of forgotten they existed... but this recipe brought back some wonderful memories and now I'll have to try it :)

    1. Hi Sam! Great question. I've heard good things about this veggie dog recipe: http://thriftyliving.net/2008/10/20/homemade-veggie-hotdogs/

According to the Shape website Pillsbury crescent rolls actually are vegan. They say, "Despite that buttery taste, it's a number of vegetable oils that give these flaky baked goods their flavor." You can see where they mention it at this link: http://www.shape.com/healthy-eating/diet-tips/12-surprising-vegan-foods/slide/3

Hopefully that helps! It may take some more work because of making the dogs yourself, but I think you could make them ahead and freeze them for easy use the night of. Also, if you have a Trader Joes nearby I'd check and see if they sell any meatless dogs that are also vegan.
