Literary Libations: A1 Cocktail

The A1 cocktail is extremely quick and simple. It has a very strong flavor and is great for slowly sipping while contemplating the moral complications of the protagonist in your latest novel.

You will need: 1 oz. gin (I drink Gordon's Dry London Gin), 1/2 oz. Grand Marnier, 1 dash grenadine, 1 dash lemon juice, and ice. Put ice into a cocktail shaker and pour the rest over the top. Shake and strain into a cocktail glass, or any glass you have handy. I doubled the recipe for my drink.

Currently in my literary life I just finished reading Green Heart by Alice Hoffman and have just picked up The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson. They are drastically different books for the most part, although the description of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo could almost be applied to both books when it says it "combines murder mystery, family saga, love story, and financial intrigue into one satisfyingly complex and entertainingly atmospheric novel." Ok, Green Heart doesn't deal with finances, but pretty much everything else.

Green Heart is actually the combination of two different Alice Hoffman stories: Green Angel and Green Witch. This book is very sensitive and very humanizing. In the first part of the book our protagonist, Green, goes through a family tragedy early on. While the tragedy has happened to the entire community, Green internalizes it and chooses independence rather than reaching out to those around her. We see everything through the eyes of Green as she slowly begins to heal and accept who she is. In the second part of the story Green uses her new found hope to search for a better, happier future. She records the stories of those in her community who also experienced loss, befriends the hopeless, and gets a little revenge along the way. Green Heart is filled with powerful imagery and is told with a philosophical and poetic lilt. Green Heart is not fast paced, but rather takes you through a very human process of recovery and finding joy.
