Literary Libations: IBC Root Beer

Share it Please

I'm not really a soda drinker. In general I'd rather have juice or tea than a soda, but there is one exception. I have a love for root beer that is anchored in childhood memories. As a kid my favorite summer treat was root beer float, it's perfect when the root beer is icy cold and the ice cream hasn't had any time to melt. There is a temperature sweet spot, and if you hit it just right a layer of root beer will actually freeze around the scoop of ice cream. Normally I just get Dad's Root Beer or A&W Root Beer, but there is one that rises above all the rest, and that is IBC. It has the most quintessentially root beer taste of any root beer I've ever tasted.

There is just something special about an IBC Root Beer. Not only does it, in my opinion, taste the best, but they also come in such classic bottles. There isn't a paper label that gets gummy with condensation (which I hate), no, they use shaped glass in a rich, deep brown color that looks just like how a root beer bottle should look. Every time I take one of these out of the fridge and pop the top I immediately think back to the summer nights on my parent's porch when we all sat around drinking root beer floats.

I've finally done a little bit of reading, not much as my week's have been jam packed, but I've actually met the character the book is named after. Woah. I'm a whole tenth of the way through! For those who don't remember, because, let's face it, it's been a while since a book has actually made it on here, I'm reading The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. Yup, I know her name now guys, it's Lisbeth Salander in case you were wondering. So far I've felt like the book is a little disjointed, it's skipped through a couple different character consciousnesses and I'm only 10% of the way through. I don't think it's quite fair to judge the book yet, though, as I think I've just gotten to the point when it hit's it's stride. So far the book seems to be about a well-known journalist who somehow got roped into publishing an article about a very large company, accusing them of all sorts of transgressions, without anyway to back up the claims. He has now been charged with liable. It is strongly implied that somehow the journalist is either being threatened into staying quite on his sources or that he has been set up. Either way he is now to serve jail time. Lisbeth Salander has been privately hired to investigate the journalist and see how he came to be in this position. She is about to plunge into a dark and dangerous underworld.

I'm quite intrigued and can't wait for the story to really get underway, I love a good mystery. I'm really  hoping that this book lives up to the hype!
